Who am I?
Change is something that I’m used to and something I love. I’m truly at my happiest when I’m advancing towards a goal. I’m happiest when I’m taking action towards achieving what I want in life. I make a decision on what I want, decide how to get there, formulate a plan, and then start the journey. Often times I get there, but sometimes on the journey I change my mind. That’s OK though, because it’s what I want! Mind you, I haven’t always been like that and at times during my life, I didn’t know what it was I wanted. During those times I had to figure it out and it often took a very long time.
For more than 20 years I worked in a corporate environment. The first 10 of those were in London where I worked as an Operations Director working mainly within the banking and finance sectors. During this time I was lucky enough to travel throughout Europe, Asia and the US.
After working in the US on various assignments, I decided I wanted to move there permanently. I returned to London and started to make plans that would eventually find me a permanent position in New York. Again, I worked in a similar environment and after six years I wanted a change again. I had a desire to live on the west coast in California. I approached my bosses and I secured a role based in San Francisco however it took me all over the US. After 18 months (for me, California wasn’t all it was cracked up to be – or what I had thought it would be), I returned to New York.
Once back in New York, I was starting to become disillusioned with the corporate world. When I looked at my career to date, and reviewed what it was I liked doing and those things that made me happy, I realised it was time for a complete career change. However, I wasn’t sure of what it should be.
For as long as I can remember, I always wanted to live in Spain – the hot weather, the relaxed attitude and the cheap wine and Sangria were all part of the attraction. Once I returned from New York to London I bought a house in South East Spain. I found myself coming out here on a regular basis so I decided that it made more sense for me to live here permanently.
I was lucky enough to be able to afford to take time out and study, and for two years I studied coaching (I qualified with distinction from Europe’s largest school of coaching; Noble Manhattan – I am also an IIC-International Institute of Coaching-Accredited Coach). When I looked back at my career I realised that I got my kicks from helping, encouraging and watching people develop as individuals. Once in New York, I was asked to speak with a group of people in Harlem (of all ages and from all walks of life) about their aspirations and dreams. It was an experience that I found extremely rewarding and it turned out to be the catalyst that launched my coaching career.
I too am the product of the coaching experience. Three times I have worked with a coach and each time I made a major change in my life. I bring many things to coaching but mostly it’s my depth of life experience; my strong sense of understanding and creativity; my deep desire to help others develop in a way in which they want to; and finally my humour. I truly believe that whatever it is you want from life, you must take action towards achieving it!
