How To Make Your Goals A Reality

7 ways to get your goals right back on track

Do you know what you need to do; yet you never get round to actually doing it?

Do you over-promise, yet often under-deliver?

Is your enthusiasm raring to go; yet your actions are half-hearted?

If you are nodding in agreement at the above questions, then you know something has to happen in order to get the results and success you want. If you do nothing, nothing will happen! To ensure you no longer keep coming up with excuses or distractions, however plausible they may seem to you, then follow these seven key steps to help you get your goals right back on track.

1. How much do you want your goal?

On a scale of 0 - 10 [10 being very motivated to take action and 0 being completely disinterested], how much do you want your goal? How motivated are you to take the steps to make it happen? You cannot expect to act confidently and take action if you don't know why you really want to make changes in your life. Therefore, you may need to re-assess the original goal or objective and revise the actions needed to make it happen. Only ever choose goals that you really want to achieve; otherwise, what is the point?

2. Give yourself the time to complete your actions!

We all lead busy lives, yet when your life is full to bursting it can sometimes feel that there just isn't the time to make all these changes. Be organised, plan ahead and set time aside. Keep a diary of 'tasks to do' items. Decide when you're going to do something, write it down, and commit to it, for one clear reason - because you want it so much! Keeping written records of your progress can also help you review and maintain your motivation. Remember, if your goal is very important to you, then you will be more motivated to work towards it.

3. Who or what is stopping you from making progress?

On a practical level, you may not yet have the skills or tools at your disposal to make changes happen. Seek advice and research if you are unsure of how to acquire the skills necessary, and prioritise what you need and when. For example, if you wanted to change career direction and needed to get different qualifications or training to improve your chances of getting an interview, then look into the relevant courses and identifying when you could make a start. Taking the action of researching your next steps, speaking to a course leader, or making time to read a prospectus are all small ways to achieving the bigger goal.

Has someone close to you, who typically supports you in everything else in your life, not been very encouraging about the changes you now want to make? Consider how this change or your actions are going to affect them? Are they going to lose out in some way by you taking these steps? Perhaps they are jeopardising your progress because they are fearful, or jealous even, of what might happen if you are successful? Sometimes they just may not be aware that they are acting like this. It is essential to talk to the people who are important in your life in order to explain what you're doing, why it is a priority to you and what it would mean when you achieve it. Clarify what support you really need from them in order to make your goal work.

Be honest - has it been YOU that has stopped you from taking action? What are you afraid of? Perhaps you're afraid of the consequences of big actions. Afraid you might fail - afraid you might not and what these changes may mean! Ensure that fear does not hold you back.

4. Believe you deserve success and happiness

You are absolutely, 100% worthy of a better life, a more fulfilling job, a happier relationship, a fitter and healthier you… You deserve every happiness and success, which will only come to you if you work hard at achieving it.

5. Make your goals easier to achieve

How frustrated are you when things don't go as quickly as you'd like? Are you impatient to see results fast? Who wouldn't be, particularly if this is something you have wanted for so long? Make achieving your goal much easier by incorporating several small steps, rather than one huge leap that may be too overwhelming. You have real ability to make things change, and whenever you do your confidence will naturally grow - before you know it, you'll be making swift progress and feeling much more positive.

6. Appreciate every successful step that gets you nearer your goal

It is important to recognise all progress you make, however small. Chart every incremental step you take and note how much closer you are to achieving what you want. Rewarding your successes as you go along can really boost your motivation. Big, financial flourishes are not always necessary to celebrate - although that is always an option if you wish! Consider the small treats that will make you feel good about yourself along the way, and only give these to yourself when you truly deserve them. Ensure that the true reward is when you achieve the actual goal itself.

7. How a Coach can make a difference!

A Career or Life Coach can keep you focused on your goals and actions, help maintain your momentum and provide completely independent and committed attention on you. A coach can also provide some structure for your ideas, challenge inconsistencies and encourage you to deliver to your timeframes.

Remember, you have real ability to make things change, and whenever you do your confidence will naturally grow. Before you know it, you'll be making swift progress and feeling much more positive.
